Now the group stages are out of the way we’re looking at the winners market, the “to make the final” market and the top goal scorers market. The 2016 Champions League looks set to be one of the most competitive yet with a few big names playing well, especially Barcelona and Bayern. There’s also Real Madrid who can’t be discounted and a PSG team thats getting further in the competition every year.
Champions League winners tips
5 times champions Barca are the favourites to win and rightly so in my opinion. Bayern are a short price to and are a decent team but I feel Barca would have the upper hand between the two if it came to it. With their front 3 Barca look unstoppable and whilst others may challenge them I’m not sure who could beat them. We are covering a couple of other options though just in case. I’d expect these odds to shorten as they get further in the tournament.
Atletico Madrid 14/1 – Beaten finalists in 2014 Atletico are still strong contenders with the way that Diego Simeone has them playing. Challenging Barcelona and Real Madrid in La Liga Atletico are a force to be reckoned with and 14/1 looks good value for a trade out at lower odds later in the tournament. Atletico have what you would class as an easier draw facing PSV Eindhoven in the next round and I’d be very surprised if they didn’t go through.
To make the final tips
This is the market that interested me most as I think there’s some real value here, however we are really playing the luck of the draw until the quarter final stages where we can see the possible paths to the final. There’s again not really much value in Barca and Bayern so we’re looking outsider and have our best pick for you. You can have a dutch on either Barcelona or Bayern to make the final at equivalent odds of 1.24 but that still doesn’t really grab me.
Paris St Germain – 11/2 – In the Champions league PSG have been improving every year and I think this could be the year they get to the final. There squad is packed full of talent from back to front and they’ll be enough to worry any team in the competition. In the next round they’re play Chelsea who aren’t really playing that well still and PSG have been in sparkling form in the French league this season. Chelsea and PSG have met in the knock out stages in the last two seasons with PSG going through on away goals in 2015 and Chelsea on away goals in 2014.
This season I can see PSG going though again and then its just a case of who they get in the next round draw. With a bit of luck PSG could easily make the final with their current form and at 11/2 I’m happy to back them in this market.
Top scorer tips
This is already a tough market to pick with Ronaldo on 11 goals already (Via Uefa.com) with Lewandowski the closest to him on 7 goals , which is still a good tally after the group stages. Its going to be tricky for anyone to catch Ronaldo unless he gets injured, which rarely happens, or they get knocked out by Roma in the next round – Which again is unlikely. At best odds of 1.17 we won’t be backing him and have a couple of punts for who could potentially out score him in this years Champions league. We’re only taking small stakes on this as the chance of Ronaldo not winning the top scorers prize is very small.
Robert Lewandowski 7/1 – The next player in the Champions league top scorer betting is the Bayern Munch forward who’s scored 7 goals so far this campaign. If Bayern are to go far in the competition, as expected, the Lewandowski could be the man to back for the goals. The main issue is being 4 goals behind Ronaldo as a starting point but thats achievable if he can get some goals in the next round.
Luis Suarez 16/1 – Again the next man in the betting and again this would be quite a turn around as Suarez is only on 5 gaols so far. The biggest chance he has is that Barcelona are capable of big scores and he could get right in amongst the goals over the coming rounds. This would still be quite an achievement and really we need Ronaldo not to score any more goals.
