Trainers guide: Nicky Henderson

nicky henderson

Nicky Henderson has horse racing running straight through his veins. This was passed down to him by his father, Johnny Henderson who was somewhat of a Cheltenham hero. Johnny was a founder of the Racecourse Holdings trust, which helped secure the future of the Cheltenham racecourse. Because of Johnny’s contribution he even has one of the races named after him. (The Johnny Henderson Grand Annual Race).

Nicky Henderson previously has been an amateur Jockey and also assistant trainer to Fred Winter back in the seventies.  As a trainer Nicky Henderson has won the title of British jump racing champion trainer three times. He won it twice back in the 80’s and also last year, which puts him in very good stead to perform well this year. Although he has not won this title anywhere near as many times as say martin Pipe or Paul Nicholls, He still has a phenomenal record at the Cheltenham festival that cannot be disputed. He has been the leading trainer at the festival three times already in 200o, 2010 and 2012.

Nicky Henderson has had 314 runners in the Cheltenham festival since 2003. He has achieved 25 wins,  with 88 horses having placed. If you had put a £1 stake on each of his runners at the starting price you would be down only £28.53. He has a 8% win ratio.

Here is a list of some of Nicky Henderson’s big wins at Cheltenham

See You Then – Winner of the champion hurdle three years running (1985, 1986 and 1987)

Punjabi – Winner of the Champion Hurdle in 2009

Zaynar – Winner of the Triumph Hurdle in 2009

Binocular – Winner of the Champion Hurdle in 2010

Long Run – Winner of the Cheltenham Gold Cup in 2011

Bob’s Worth – Winner of the Cheltenham Gold cup in 2013

As you can see from above most of Nicky Henderson’s success has been in recent times. Willie Mullins has stolen the show for the past three years, but Henderson will be keen to secure some wins in this year’s festival.

there are many other horses not named here that are competing under Henderson this year, but these are some of his more well known ones. These horses have been entered in to numerous races throughout the festival so may not indeed end up running in the race mentioned here. They are certainly in the running to do so at this very moment in time.

As you may see from our tips bogs we strongly fancy some of Nicky Henderson’s horses to do the business this year despite not being clear favourites. He loves this festival and would love to pick up leading trainer for the fourth time.
