Star Sports App Review

How to download the Star Sports App

iPhone/iPad users

Users can choose to download the Star Sports iPhone app from the App Store or visit the Star Sports mobile website.

Android users

A dedicated Android app can be installed from the Google Play store. Alternatively, there is the Star Sports site.

Other mobile operating systems

Users can access the Star Sports Mobile site from any mobile web browser. For example, Firefox, Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge or Opera.

Navigation And Style

The Star Sports brand refers to itself as “The gentlemen’s bookmaker”. There is an air of prestige with the brand, which shines through in the overall app design. The interface is light, elegant and simple, with a Royal Blue wrapping.

Scrolling is smooth and navigating to events takes a logical pathway. However, a small pitfall here is the absence of any favourites list. This means it can take longer to revisit events, compared to other betting apps.

Therefore, we found ourselves relying on the search feature frequently to access a specific event that we were interested in. We found this to be the quickest way.

Star Sports App Features

Sports Variety

There are over 25 different sport categories found inside the A-Z menu of the Star Sports app. Alongside sporting events, users can also bet on politics (UK & US) and celebrity programmes, such as I’m A Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here.

Live Betting

A dedicated In-play section provides registered users the chance to bet on sporting events that are live and underway.

Tapping on an event will open up the event page, displaying a live tracker and available in-play markets.

The live tracker contains key statistics from the game to give users more of an informed choice to their in-play bets. For example, a football live tracker shows:

  • An animated visual graphic that constantly updates to detail what is actually happening on the pitch.
  • Number of corners.
  • Amount of red cards.
  • Number of yellow cards.
  • A timeline showing exactly what happened at what period in the match.

Cash Out

As with many other bookmakers, users get the opportunity of cashing out of bets before the outcome has been settled.

The standard cash out feature is available, but users won’t be offered one on free bets, nor will they on build-a-bet bets.

Partial cash out is also a no go here, but he good news is that standard cash out is, on selected markets.

Betting Types & Markets

There’s various different bets that can be made on the Star Sports app. These range from a basic single bet, to doubles, trebles, multiples, accumulators and even combination bets, such as patents or trixies.

In terms of markets, there’s enough to keep most punters happy. However, people could find a larger choice elsewhere. Horse racing fans have all the popular markets covered, but those. Betting on football may be disappointed to find an absence of player card markets, for example.

Star Sports app features

Bonuses And Promotions

The Star Sports app offers a nice balance of perks and special offers. Most of these can be found from the scrolling banner space at the top of the home page.

Additionally, there is a dedicated Promos space available from within the bottom menu bar. There’s a lack of bet boost and price enhancements here. However, we have seen cash-back offers, free bets, accumulator bonuses, cash prizes and free spins on offer.

Quick Bet

An integrated bet feature makes it lightning quick to place a single bet. Once a selection has been made a quick bet slip will automatically appear. From there, all that is required is to enter a stake, review and to tap on the Bet Now button.

If a multiple bet is desired, the quick bet slip can be closed down once the initial selection has been made, allowing for more to be added. The multiple selections can then be accessed from the regular bet slip.

Secure Transactions

Depositing and withdrawing funds are safe and secure. However, the payment method options are pretty bleak compared to some of the competition.

Users can deposit and withdraw using the following:

  • Visa
  • Mastercard
  • Maestro
  • Bank transfer
  • Cheque

No options at all for digital wallets or Cryptocurrency may well be a dealbreaker here for certain potential customers.

Live Streaming

Users are able to watch horse racing and greyhound live streams while they bet on the Star Sports app.

Some races are free to watch. Others have a requirement of a minimum £1 bet being placed on the race in question in order to unlock the live stream.

A nice feature to the live streaming service is that the media player is able to play picture-in-picture (PiP). This means users can browse round the events and markets while the live stream plays in a smaller window.

The window can then be dragged around the screen to be located wherever the user desires. There’s also the ability to close the Star Sports app while still keeping the live stream window visible, while viewing other apps.

Odds Strength & Display

When comparing odds prices with other betting apps, we found Star Sports to be fairly competitive with the horse racing and greyhound prices. When it came to football, Star Sports were a little behind top price market leaders.

This wouldn’t make much of a difference when placing singles or small multiple, but can be sizeable when building large accumulators.

Odds are clear to digest and there are some handy features that accompany them that help users to understand price movements.

if a price changes, the box will flash a certain colour depending on the how it has changed.

There are three colours used to symbolise the change:

  1. Pinkodds have drifted out
  2. Blueodds have shortened
  3. Greymarket suspended

Horse racing punters are also treated to a price history column next to the odds. This shows how the odds have changed since the market opened.

Bet Builder

Star Sports offer a Build-a-Bet feature across popular football events. Users can compile multiple market selections from the same event to make up a single bundled bet.

Each selection needs to come in for the bet to pay out. The markets here cover scores, goal scorers, corners, cards and handicaps, across various periods of the match.

Star Sports Build a bet

One downside here is that if one selection gets voided, for whatever reason, the whole Build-a-Bet bet will be voided. This can lead to quite a few bets being scratched off, especially if they are placed well in advance.

Telephone Betting

Star Sports are well known for taking on huge bets in terms of stake. These bets can either be placed on the app, or for a more personal touch can be rung through directly to the traders. Telephone credit and debit accounts can be applied for, as can a trader account for those who want to minimise risk on their own lay bets.

Casino

Although Star Sports are renowned for their sports betting (especially horse racing and greyhound racing), they have branched out by adding a snazzy casino section to their online service.

This is one section we were highly impressed with. There’s hundreds of titles available ranging from slots, Megaways, table games, Slingo and instant wins.

The layout is easy on the eye and there’s specific casino offers available to opt in to. A Live Casino section provides even more options as live dealers do their stuff to serve out classic casino games and quirky new titles. There’s a lot to go at here to keep registered users entertained for a very long time.

Overall Thoughts And Opinions

The Star Sports app is a fully UK licensed betting app that covers all the basics and has evolved to include up to date features and a casino offering.

All the main features are covered, but if you were to browse around other betting apps, the features offered are somewhat diluted.

The casual punter may not notice, but the serious bettors out there may well see this app as being inadequate for their betting style/preference.

The main strengths here lie in the horse racing and greyhound offering, alongside a fantastic casino section packed full of variety and choice.

The app is not at the level to make our best betting app list as it stands. However, it is going in the right direction by continuing to improve the service with regular updates that add new features and remove minor bugs.

Q & A

Odds on the Star Sports app can be displayed in either fractions or decimals. To change the format, tap on the user icon where the account balance is shown and then enter in to the settings and contact preferences.

The odds format setting should now show at the top of the page.

This process forms part of the obligations Star Sports have as a UK licensed bookmaker. They are required to know their customer for a number of reasons. These include:

  • To ensure the user is aged 18 years or older.
  • To prevent money laundering.
  • To prevent identity theft.

Therefore, users are asked to provide certain documents for the user to be fully verified. The documents usually required are a passport or driving license (to verify identity), alongside a utility bill or bank statement dated within the last three months (to verify address).
